Paul McCartney Standards album mixing at the Capitol Studios

We’ve sprinkled into our mix tracks from Paul McCartney’s brand new jazz/standards CD produced by the legendary Tommy LiPuma. Diana Krall handled arrangements and can be heard playing piano on most of the album’s tracks. Another treat is Eric Clapton lending his masterful guitar playing on one of the songs. The album boosts an all-star cast of jazz greats including Christian McBride, John & Bucky Pizzarelli, Mike Manieri, John Clayton, Jeff Hamilton with Johnny Mandel also doing arrangements. What CDs would Stacey Kent take with her if she were stranded on a desert island? Below are her choices along with comments from Stacey:

1 Nancy Wilson & Cannonball Adderly (ALBUM: Nancy Wilson + Cannonball Adderly )

A PERFECT RECORD AND AN IDEAL PAIRING. NEVER WILL I MARRY AND HAPPY TALK LIFT MY SPIRITS WITHOUT FAIL.

2 Stan Getz – I’m Late, I’m Late (ALBUM: FOCUS)

EDDIE SAUTER’S STRING COMPOSITIONS – GETZ’S PART IS IMPROVISED
I’M LATE I’M LATE FEATURES ROY HAYNES’ SCURRYING BRUSH WORK. GETZ HAS A MELODIC AND RHYTHMIC GIFT THAT ENABLES HIM TO INTEGRATE HIS IMPROVISATIONS INTO ANY MUSICAL ENVIRONMENT. THIS IS THE BEST ‘THIRD STREAM’ ALBUM.

3 Elis Regina . Elis & Tom (ALBUM: TOM & ELIS)
WATERS OF MARCH

ELIS REGINA AND JOBIM HAVE AN INCREDIBLE CHEMISTRY. THE MARRIAGE OF ELIS REGINA’S EARTHINESS WITH THE SOPHISTICATION OF JOBIM’S MELODIES BRINGS OUT THE BEST IN BOTH OF THEM.

4 Irene Kral
I LIke You, You’re Nice (written by Blossom Dearie)
(ALBUM with Alan Broadbent)
KRAL HAS A WARM STRAIGHTFORWARD AND UNDRAMATIC DELIVERY. EVEN SO, SHE IS ABLE TO CONVEY A LOT OF EMOTION BENEATH THE CALM SURFACE. THIS IS THE BEST VOCAL/PIANO DUET ALBUM EVER.

5 Ella and Duke (ALBUM: ELLA FITZGERALD WITH DUKE ELLINGTON)

I GOT IT BAD

ELLA HAS SUCH EASE WITH HER VOICE. SHE CAN DO ANYTHING AND YET UNDERSTANDS THAT THE MAXIMUM IMPACT CAN COME FORM DOING VERY LITTLE BEYOND JUST SINGING THE SONG. ELLINGTON’S TREACLE-LIKE ARRNGEMENTS ARE THE PERFECT COMPLIMENT TO ELLA’S HONEY TONES.

6 Paul Desmond Samba With Some Barbecue (ALBUM:

THIS TRACK IS HIP! DESMOND IS BEST KNOWN FOR HIS WORK WITH BRUBECK, BUT HERE HE PLAYS A SAMBA WITH A BIG BAND. HIS RELAXED FEEL AND MELODIC STYLE IS PERFECT. THE PIANO SOLO IS BY HERBIE HANCOCK — THERE’S A GREAT MOMENT WHEN HH DEVELOPS HIS FIRST IDEA FROM THE PREVIOUS SOLO. IT GIVES THE WHOLE TRACK AN ORGANIC FEEL.

7 Jimmy Giuffre Western Suite – (ALBUM: PONY EXPRESS)

JIMMY GIUFFRE, BOB BROOKMEYER AND JIM HALL

THIS IS AN UNUSUAL GROUPING OF SAX, TROMBONE AND GUITAR. YET THE MUSIC IS ALMOST ORCHESTRAL IN ITS RANGE. THE MUSIC IS SO EVOCATIVE. THE TRIO PAINT A PICTURE OF AMERICA’S WEST AS EFFECTIVELY AS DEBUSSY PAINTED LA MER. LIKE FOCUS, THIS IS ANOTHER
GREAT EXAMPLE OF IMPROVISED MUSIC BEING WOVEN SEAMLESSLY INTO COMPOSED MUSIC.

8 KENNY BARRON TRIO
(ALBUM: LIVE AT BRADLEY’S)
EVERYBODY LOVES MY BABY

I SAW THIS TRIO LIVE AT BRADLEY’S WITH JIM. TO HEAR A GREAT TRIO STRETCH OUT LIKE THIS IN A CLOSE RELAXED ENVIRONMENT IS ONE THE BEST EXPERIENCES A JAZZ FAN CAN HAVE. IT’S A SHAME THAT BRADLEY’S IS GONE.

9. BILL EVANS – HAUNTED HEART (ALBUM EXPLORATIONS). Beautiful.

10. I’ll SEE YOU IN MY DREAMS — DJANGO REINHARDT
This is the first song I heard as a teenager that instigated my buying of jazz albums. It was my moment discovery of the genre. I first heard Django at a friend’s house, I loved it, I needed more! I asked his name and wrote it down, went to the shop the following day and bought various albums, looked on the back covers, found more names of other musicians. This was my start…
